The Minnesota Psychological Association cosponsors Distinguished Scholar Lectures with Macalester College's Psychology Department

This session is at the intermediate level and is designed for psychologists, other mental health professionals, students and faculty.

About the Program

The greatest challenges humans currently face – climate change, poverty, epidemics, financial meltdowns – are the result of humans acting within enormously complex systems without fully understanding how these systems work. To facilitate decision making in these critical areas, scholars from diverse fields argue that systems thinking is fundamental.  This talk will explore the concept of systems thinking from a psychological point of view. I will describe efforts to increase systems thinking and measure its impact on decision-making and behavior.

This session qualifies for 1.5 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 1.5-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define what systems thinking is.
  2. Identify various ways that systems thinking can improve decision making.
  3. Describe interventions that can enhance systems thinking.

About the Presenter:

Cindy McPherson Frantz, Ph.D., received her Ph.D. in personality and social psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is currently the Norman D. Henderson Professor of Psychology at Oberlin College. She is a social and environmental psychologist who researches humans’ relationship to the natural world, and how to promote sustainable behavior. Her projects include using feedback technology to encourage conservation behavior, understanding the impact of connecting to the natural world, and discovering ways to promote systems thinking. Dr. Frantz also directs the Community Based Social Marketing Research Lab, a collaborative research program between faculty, students and staff to develop, test and promote behavior change programs that reduce Oberlin College’s carbon emissions.
