This lu nch and learn will review what is known about how parenting is affected by traumatic experiences and how to strengthen parenting with evidence-based p ractice. Dr. Gewirtz will discuss a program of prevention and intervention research focused on modifying parent training interventions for trauma-affe cted families, including those affected by war (as either a service member or a civilian), political violence, refugee and immigration experiences, ho melessness and domestic violence. There will be opportunities for dialogue among program participants.

Lunch & L earns are informal programs for psychologists and other mental health profe ssionals and are at the intermediate level.

bigail Gewirtz, Ph.D., LP, holds a B.S., Psychology, University Co
llege London; M.A., Vocational Counseling Psychology, Tel Aviv University:
and Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, Columbia University. She is the John and Na
ncy Lindahl Leadership Professor in the Department of Family Social Science
and the Institute of Child Development, and director of the Institute for
Translational Research in Children’s Mental Health at the University
of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the development, effectiveness testin
g, and implementation of targeted prevention programs that promote child re
silience among highly stressed families including those affected by militar
y deployment and war.
The Minnesota Psyc hological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Minnesota Psycholog ical Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
