< h2 class="venue_details">About the ProgramUrban provid ers see persons from rural areas in their practices as specialty referrals, clients moving to cities, and in tele-behavioral health. This presentation broadens diversity knowledge, describing the specific behavioral health ne eds, strengths, issues, culture, and skills needed to treat persons from ru ral communities. Topics addressed include immigrant and minority presence, opioid abuse, poverty, returning soldiers, LGBTQ residents, economic issues , domestic violence, and suicides. The presentation will involve both lectu re and group discussion.
This session quali fies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.
Katherine M. (Kay) Sla ma, Ph.D., LP, has worked in clinical services, teaching, manageme nt, consulting and research. She received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in clinica l psychology from the University of Iowa, and an M.S.S. in Mental Health Ad ministration from the University of South Dakota. She is currently an adjun ct associate professor at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She has published articles on rural behavioral health and is involved in dissemina tion/evaluation for online rural stress workshops. Dr. Slama has served on the Governing Council of the Minnesota Psychological Association (MPA) and as President of the Minnesota Rural Health Association. She has also been M innesota’s APA Rural Health Coordinator, chair of MPA’s Rural a nd Greater Minnesota Division, and chair and coordinator of its Rural Behav ioral Health Practice Conference.
Willie B. Garrett, Ed.D., M .S., LP, CEAP, is a consulting and generalist psychologist in priv ate practice. He has areas of specialization including, trauma recovery, cr itical incidents, work performance, training, law enforcement, multi-cultur al issues, management, ethics, organization development, military deploymen t and reintegration, and workplace violence. He received an M.S. in Counsel ing Psychology from Minnesota State University—Mankato and an Ed.D. i n Organization Development from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Garr ett has held previous positions as the Director of Professional Affairs of the Minnesota Psychological Association, Director of EAP Clinical Quality, and Director of Behavioral Health at several large integrated care medical clinics.
The Minnesota Psychological Association is approved by the A merican Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psych ologists. The Minnesota Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
