Adolescence is a critical developmental stage that is necessary for a healthy adult adjustment. African American adolescents h ave tremendous potential for success in adulthood but are derailed by disru ptive developmental experiences. Many of the teens and their families lack the resources and strategies to buffer the effects of negative emotional ex periences; and the consequence is underachievement, substance abuse, and in tegrating dysfunctional behaviors. Therapists are often puzzled by the prot ective behaviors that black teens have adapted to cope and survive in syste ms that do not value their abilities and rights. This presentation will exp lore the psychological world of black adolescents and ways to help them ach ieve success.

About the Presenter:
Willie Garrett, M.S., LP, CEAP, Ed.D., has worked as a licen
sed psychologist for over forty years in a variety of urban and rural setti
ngs. He is the former Behavioral Health Director of several large integrat
ed care clinics. Dr. Garrett has served on the boards of Capella Universit
y, Adoptive Families of America, and the Employee Assistance Society of Nor
th America. Dr. Garrett was the 2020 President of the Minnesota Psychologi
cal Association and is the current President of the Minnesota chapter of th
e Association of Black Psychologists.
The Minnesota Psychological Ass ociation is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor c ontinuing education for psychologists. The Minnesota Psychological Associat ion maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
