Diabetes is the most prevalent non-communicable disease in the U nited States, with over 10% of the population diagnosed with Type I & I I diabetes. People with diabetes (PWD) are twice as likely to experience de pression and anxiety, and those who do have co-morbid mental health conditi ons typically have worse physical outcome. In addition, all PWD experience some degree of distress regarding diagnosis, treatment regimen and long-ter m complications. This workshop has been developed by a team of psychologist s for their colleagues in private practice to inform you about the basics o f diabetes and its care, as well as typical impact on PWD and appropriate p sychological care.
This session is at the intermediate level and is d esigned for psychologists and other mental health professionals.
This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education c redits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.
Doug Tynan, Ph.D., ABPP, is the Coordinator for Mental Health Education for the American Diabetes Association. He received his Ph.D., ABPP, in Psychology from SUNY at Binghamton. Prior to that, he w as Director of Integrated Health Care for the American Psychological Associ ation. As a staff psychologist at AI duPont Hospital for Children and Child ren National Medical Center in Washington he developed integrated health an d mental health in both primary care and diabetes clinics. He has served on State of Delaware and federal HHS advisory boards on health care reform, a nd early childhood programs, with a focus on coordinating health, mental he alth and educational services. He is a Professor of Pediatrics at Thomas Je fferson University in Philadelphia. He was founding co-editor of Clinical P ractice in Pediatric Psychology, has served on the editorial boards of psyc hology, pediatric and public health journals.
