Please note: when driving down Park Glen Road, go past the Park Glen and Walden Woods apartments until you come to the cul-de-sac. Drive through the cul-de-sac and The Harrington Company office will be on your left, you will see the teal trim on the sign and doors.

About the program:

This lunch and learn will review what is known about how parenting is affected by traumatic experiences and how to strengthen parenting with evidence-based practice. Dr. Gewirtz will discuss a program of prevention and intervention research focused on modifying parent training interventions for trauma-affected families, including those affected by war (as either a service member or a civilian), political violence, refugee and immigration experiences, homelessness and domestic violence. There will be opportunities for dialogue among program participants.

Please note: You must attend the full program to get continuing education credit for the event.

This program qualifies for 1.0 continuing education credit. 

Lunch & Learns are informal programs for psychologists and other mental health professionals and are at the intermediate level.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe key empirical literature regarding trauma and parenting and key principles for intervening with parents and families after traumatic events.

About the presenter:

Abigail Gewirtz, Ph.D., LP, holds a B.S., Psychology, University College London; M.A., Vocational Counseling Psychology, Tel Aviv University: and Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, Columbia University. She is the John and Nancy Lindahl Leadership Professor in the Department of Family Social Science and the Institute of Child Development, and director of the Institute for Translational Research in Children’s Mental Health at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the development, effectiveness testing, and implementation of targeted prevention programs that promote child resilience among highly stressed families including those affected by military deployment and war.


The Minnesota Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Minnesota Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

*REGISTRATION: There is no early bird rate for registration. The registration fees are: MPA Members = $25, Non-members = $30, Students = $25. Registration fee includes box lunch and CE certificate (1 credit). We will not be duplicating program materials. Participants are limited to the first 30 registrants. There is no on-site registration.


MPA Event Refund Policy:  A 100% refund will be made if the event is cancelled. Refunds, less a $5 handling fee, will be given if a written cancellation is received at least two working days before the scheduled program begins. Transfer of fee to another program is granted if written cancellation notice is received at least one day before the program. No refund or transfer is given the day of the program.
