About the Program:
Stories are all around us—we tell them, we hear them, and we often think of our lives as a story. Decades of research in narrative psychology has demonstrated the foundational role of stories for developing a sense of identity. But where do these stories come from? What role does the broader society play? The concept of master narratives reveals how there are cultural scripts, or templates, that inform how we think about and construct our own personal identities. This talk will 1) outline the basic ideas behind the master narrative framework, 2) detail how master narratives maintain inequalities in society, and 3) describe the implications of master narratives for understanding psychological well-being.

This program qualifies for 1.5 continuing education credits. Attendees must attend entire session to gain credit.

Participants will be able to:

1. Explain how and why master narratives impact individual identities
2. Identify master narratives present in the broader society and the participants’ communities
3. Apply the concept of master narratives to participants’ own work and interests in psychological well-being

About the Presenter:
Moin Syed, Ph.D., received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. Dr. Syed is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His primary research area is identity and personality development among ethnically-diverse adolescents and emerging adults, with a secondary interest in methodological, theoretical, and historical issues in the social sciences. He has published nearly 150 articles and chapters, is past Editor of both Infant and Child Development and Emerging Adulthood, and is co-PI of the Northstar STEM Alliance, an NSF-LSAMP project that seeks to improve the positive experiences and graduation rates of underrepresented students in STEM across Minnesota.
