About the Program:
21st Century globalization is a dynamic macro context for human development that reverberates down to the family microsystem. Is globalization all bad for youth and families? In this lecture, I will argue that globalization involves both risks and opportunities that function as a crucible in which cultural identity development and family resilience are forged. First, I will summarize supporting evidence of this proposition from four different lines of research in my lab conducted locally in MN and globally. Second, I will zoom in on one mixed methods translational research line originating in Jamaica called “JUS Media?” to more fully describe the content and processes involved in cultural identity development and family resilience arising from “remote acculturation”, a modern form of globalization-related acculturation to a distant non-native culture that acts as a cultural determinant of health (Ferguson et al., 2012, 2015, 2018, 2020, etc.). Translating remote acculturation theory and empirical findings from the lab to the living room and classroom, JUS Media? is an efficacious multi-format preventive intervention designed to protect against the risks that U.S.-produced junk food advertising presents to the diets of Americanizing adolescents transnationally.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define globalization as evidenced in media, migration, and multiculturalism
  2. Explain several ways in which globalization facilitates cultural identity development
  3. Identify multiple forms of family resilience in the face of globalization
  4. Describe remote acculturation and enumerate the 4Ts of remote acculturation vehicles
  5. Apply media literacy principles to counteract negative health effects of global advertising
