About the Program

A small number of clinicians receive extensive training in parent behavioral training for younger children, and an even smaller number of clinicians are trained in how to adapt a parent management training protocol when working with parents of oppositional adolescents.  The aim of this presentation is to provide clinicians with an evidence-based system of empowering such parents this behavioral management skills, thereby reducing externalizing behavior and improving overall adolescent functioning.  The presentation will be broken down into three phases.  First, Dr. Marzouk will discuss how to differentiate typical adolescent defiance and rebellion versus clinically significant oppositional behavior.  He will then share his thoughts on how to gain parental buy in, as many parents of oppositional teens present to therapy with a significant, and understandable sense of hopelessness.  Finally, he will spend the majority of time discussing specific parent behavioral strategies for oppositional teens and best practices for teaching such strategies to parents.

This session is at the introductory level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Apply principles of parent management training to help decrease oppositional and defiant behavior in adolescents.
  2. Recognize the difference between developmentally appropriate defiance and clinically significant defiance during adolescence.
  3. Describe the research supporting the use of contingency-management and other behavioral strategies in working with oppositional adolescents.

About the Presenter:

Sam Marzouk, Ph.D., LP, received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Tulsa and completed his predoctoral internship at the Boys Town Center for Behavioral Health.  While there, he worked with defiant and aggressive adolescents, many of whom were referred to Boys Town from the juvenile justice system.  He gained extensive training and clinical experience in working with adolescents with externalizing behaviors.  He also frequently consulted with Boys Town program staff on evidence-based practices for managing challenging adolescent behaviors.  Sam completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Children's Minnesota in September, 2019.  He is currently the owner of Promethean Psychology LLC in Edina, Minnesota where he specializes in working with adolescent males.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: A 100% refund will be made if the event is cancelled. Refunds, less a $5 handling fee, will be given if a written cancellation is received at least two working days before the scheduled program begins. Transfer of fee to another program is granted if written cancellation notice is received at least one day before the program. No refund or transfer is given the day of the program.
