About the Program

This is an introductory level program about forensic psychology. The presentation will be organized in three sections. The first is a general orientation to the area of forensic psychology, including the scope and methods of the subfield, and ways in which forensic psychology serves different aims than clinical psychology. This section is designed for psychologists in any area of practice who would benefit from broad exposure to forensic psychology. The second section is designed for psychologists who are interested in developing a specialization in forensic psychology. This section will include practical practice guidelines, describing a good fit for forensic psychology and a psychologist’s skills and temperament, direction for developing competency and discussion of ethical issues specific to forensic work. The final section is designed to help psychologists who may find themselves, reluctantly or accidentally, working with clients involved in the legal system. Topics will include responding to subpoenas, communicating with judges and attorneys, and testimony.

Several themes will be stressed across all three sections. These include understanding and bridging the different assumptions between the fields of psychology and law, and an appreciation of "thinking forensically" rather than clinically.

This session is at the introductory level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize how forensic practice differs in content, methods, and assumptions from clinical practice.
  2. Apply principles of forensic work in their practice when confronted with court orders, subpoenas, and requests from attorneys.
  3. Demonstrate an increased ability to communicate psychological information understandably to legal professionals.
