New Member Spotlight: Deb Rich, Ph.D., L.P.

1)      What is your background in psychology (e.g., education)?

University of Minnesota Twin Cities, CSPP (Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology)

      • 1980 M.A. Thesis: Rape Center peer support training model development
      • 1999 Ph.D. Dissertation: Type and timing of post pregnancy loss support services and impact on grief outcome.

1984 – Licensed Psychologist

2013 – First cohort of nationally Certified Perinatal Loss Caregivers and only psychotherapist in   MN with CPLC credentialing.

2)     Describe your current occupation and any involvement in the Minnesota Psychological Association if applicable.

I have a specialty private practice as a Reproductive Health Psychologist, called Shoshana Center. I offer clinical services, professional training and consultation in program development.

Mission: Shoshana Center engages collaboration with all perinatal health professionals to address medical and emotional aspects of reproductive health in order to facilitate and promote provider competence and achieve family well-being.

I am interested in sharing specialty training with MPA members in order to develop more local resources for Minnesota families.

3)     What inspired you to pursue a degree in psychology?

My undergraduate degrees were in Drama and French, and I intended to be a professional actor. In all honesty, I pursued a degree in psychology in order to support myself as an actress by being a therapist. I thought I’d be good at it, and it was preferable to being a starving artist and waitress!  The plan was very successful for the first few years after my M.A. degree. Then life happened, and I became immersed in psychology with greater purpose and passion.

 4)    Why did you join the Minnesota Psychological Association?

The more immersed I became in my specialty, the more I developed national collegial connections. I want to turn my attention to developing local collegial connections for my day-to-day professional life.

5)     What do you hope to learn/gain from your new membership?

I’m also concerned about succession planning in my area of specialization.  I see MPA as the ideal venue to mentor up and coming professionals.

6)     Any outside hobbies/interests you do not mind sharing?

I continue to be an avid “patron” of the arts. I reached the pinnacle of my acting career when I performed at The Jungle Theater in 2006. I do see more acting in my future. I have been a member of the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir since 1993, and I’m not the only Jewish member. I thoroughly enjoy frequent travel for business and pleasure. And I enjoy making jewelry.
