New Member Spotlight: Heather Johnson, Psy.D., LP

1)      What is your background in psychology (e.g., education)?

I have both a Masters and a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of St. Thomas.  My undergraduate degree was in French and Philosophy. I didn’t come to my love of psychology until after my undergraduate education.

2)      Describe your current occupation and any involvement in the Minnesota Psychological Association if applicable.

I am currently the Program Director for the Masters in Counseling & Psychological Services at Saint Mary’s University. I count on my membership with the Minnesota Psychological Association to keep me updated on current trends in psychology, changes in legislation, and on-going research. This helps me keep my students up-to-date and informed as they pursue their degrees.

3)      What inspired you to pursue a degree in psychology?

I have always been fascinated by the complexities of human thought and behavior. In my early twenties, I lost both of my parents and sought out anything I could read on managing bereavement, loss, and identity. This led me to psychology in general. I continued my reading, did some volunteer work, and took a few courses. My love of psychology only grew from there.

4)      Why did you join the Minnesota Psychological Association?

I joined the Minnesota Psychological Association to stay informed about important changes, growth, and research in our field. As a director of the Masters in Counseling & Psychological Services program, I need to stay current so that our students have access to the latest information. I’m also excited about connecting with other psychologists/counselors in Minnesota.

5)      What do you hope to learn/gain from your new membership?

I hope to feel more connected to the field, overall.  I also hope to take advantage of some of the trainings offered by MPA, specifically the annual convention, and perhaps serve on a committee at some point in my career. MPA is committed to the welfare of both clinicians and clients. This is a value that I hope to bring to my own work as well.

6)      Any outside hobbies/interests you do not mind sharing?

I enjoy traveling, running, biking, hiking, reading, trying new restaurants, going to outdoor festivals in the summer, and spending time with my  partner, pets, family, and friends.
