Walk-In Counseling Center Provides Free Mental Health Services Every Weekday
Psst! What’s the best kept secret in town?
It’s this: Any person who needs mental health counseling right away, with no appointment necessary, for free, can get services in Minneapolis and Saint Paul every weekday. Walk-In Counseling Center is the place to go for services provided by mental health professionals during walk-in clinic hours. There are no barriers to service here – no fees, no copays, no sliding scale. Clients can even remain anonymous if they wish.
Walk-In has been serving clients for nearly 50 years at 2421 Chicago Ave. South, Minneapolis, Monday through Thursday evenings, and Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. In Saint Paul, we provide services at the sites of two partner organizations: Monday and Wednesday evenings at Family Tree Clinic, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Neighborhood House (see our hours at our website, www.walkin.org). At a third site we offer supportive counseling and problem solving and group services at a community event sponsored by our third partner, First Lutheran Church Love Grows Here Wellness Center.
We are, to our knowledge, the only free walk-in mental health clinic in the state, and the only one in the nation whose services are provided entirely by professional volunteers. We may be the first (or definitely the second) free, anonymous, walk-in counseling center in the world. For both clients and mental health practitioners, we provide a much-needed back-up for times when counseling might otherwise be unavailable.
Our volunteers see clients individually (or in couple/family units), and use a team consulting model in order to provide the best possible care. After each clinic, volunteers consult together to ensure that the needs of each client have been met, including follow-up appointments if the client needs them.
