Mental Health Care Coordinator

Purpose of Position Macalester College seeks to hire a full-time Mental Health Care Coordinator. This position coordinates intervention and support services for students challenged by emotional and mental health concerns that compromise personal and academic stability and success. The Care Coordinator conducts initial assessments of students presenting to Counseling Services; offers referrals and provides support in accessing appropriate mental health care on and off-campus; supports student compliance with treatment plans and/or college behavioral expectations; maintains ongoing contact with students to address needs; advocates for students individually and systemically, and; fosters self-advocacy. The position manages efficient client flow through the Health & Wellness Center via assessment, referral and management of the counseling wait list. The position also provides a limited amount of short-term mental health counseling to students via drop-ins and occasional standing appointment times. Allocation of key roles (e.g., initial assessment, case management and mental health counseling) flexes proportionally to best reflect client demand and needs of the Center.


  • Initial assessment in determining immediacy of need and appropriate treatment modalities for students seeking mental health supports.
  • Case management support to students via help identifying and accessing community supports on and off-campus.
  • Management of counseling wait list.
  • Maintenance of robust off-campus referral resource listing.
  • Monitor and record activity of contracted after-hours phone support service and provide appropriate next day follow-up as needed.
  • Short-term mental health counseling and crisis intervention; support group facilitation as needed.
  • Collaborative community education programming, trainings and/or outreach services.
  • Staff meetings, case consultations and committee assignments.
  • Consultation services to parents, faculty and staff.
  • Available for after hours on call consultation on rotating or as needed basis.


  • Master’s degree in counseling/clinical psychology, social work or related mental health field required. Terminal degree preferred.
  • Current licensure in field of practice.
  • One of more years of professional experience.
  • Knowledge of case management policies and practices.
  • Competencies in assessment and treatment of mental health conditions including individual psychotherapy and support group facilitation.
  • Ability to work successfully within the context of a highly collaborative, integrative health care unit.
  • Strong multicultural competencies and interest in working within a diverse community that prioritizes the values of inclusion.
  • Demonstrated organizational abilities. Ability to participate in the creation and execution of systems to positively effect organizational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Proficiency in use of office productively software including electronic health records, Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
  • Successful candidates will enjoy working with students in a holistic manner ranging from initial triage to coordination of mental health supports, and the direct provision of mental health treatments.
