Friday Forum: Discovering Twice Exceptionality: Assessing Developmental Disabilities in Gifted Children

Discovering Twice Exceptionality: Assessing Developmental Disabilities in Gifted Children

Megan Helmen, PsyD, LP

Program Overview

This three-hour continuing education course equips psychologists with advanced skills to accurately assess developmental disabilities (ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities) in children with intellectual giftedness. The session addresses diagnostic complexities arising from the interplay between high cognitive ability and neurodevelopmental disabilities, providing evidence- and experience-based approaches for clinical interviews, behavioral observations, and psychometric assessment. Participants will learn to interpret nuanced profiles, deliver constructive feedback, and provide tailored resources to families and educators. Participants will be better equipped to navigate the assessment process and more effectively discover, understand, and explain a twice-exceptional child's developmental profile.

Objectives

  1. Identify and describe the unique diagnostic challenges that arise when assessing ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities in intellectually gifted children.
  2. Apply advanced clinical interview and behavioral observation strategies to identify neurodevelopmental disabilities in gifted children
  3. Select, administer, and interpret appropriate psychometric assessment tools for twice-exceptional (2e) children, with attention to complex and nuanced profiles.
  4. Formulate and communicate integrated, strengths-based feedback to families and educators, addressing both the child’s abilities and areas of need.
  5. Recommend individualized resources and interventions that support the academic, social, and emotional development of twice-exceptional children.
