About the Program

Three psychologists who have advanced experience in the delivery of Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) in medical settings are presenting clinical-, empirical- and experience-based advanced level information about Integrative Behavioral Health service in both medical clinics (e.g., Primary Care, Specialty Care) and hospital settings.  This forum will focus on frameworks and models, challenges and opportunities in the context of the current health care system.  The presenters will also review the roles and opportunities for psychologists to practice IBH in three major delivery systems in Minnesota - Essentia Health (Duluth), Hennepin County Medical Center (Minneapolis) and Allina Health (across the Twin Cities).  These presentations are part of MPA’s systematic effort to provide information to psychologists about practice opportunities in different settings across the State.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss multiple collaborative roles for Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) psychologists in medical practices that improve patient outcomes, reduce health care costs.
  2. Describe the development of a framework for Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) evidence-based clinical consultation and care, measurement of clinical and quality outcomes, and leadership roles.
  3. Analyze practice models, reimbursement processes, ethical and risk issues associated with Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH).
  4. Describe an implementation strategy for transitioning to a health service psychology practice and describe the necessary competencies and skills.

Matthew Syzdek, Ph.D., LP, is a Psychology Manager at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC).  He manages Primary Care Behavioral Health and Day Treatment.  Over the past 2 years, he led an expansion of integrated behavioral health to 11 primary care clinics across the system.  He partnered with stakeholders in the organization and payors to make integrated care financially sustainable without sacrificing the principles of integration and collaboration.  Dr. Syzdek completed a Ph.D. and masters in clinical psychology at Clark University in Worcester, MA, and a master's in counseling psychology at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA. Recently, he completed his MBA in Health Care at the University of St. Thomas.   He has authored 10 peer-reviewed publications.

The presentations will be moderated by Bruce L. Bobbitt, Ph.D., LP, President-Elect of MPA.  The audience will have ample opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issues raised by the three presentations.
