About the Program

This presentation will provide an update on the science of resilience in human development and implications for prevention, policy and practice.  Illustrative research will focus on children and families at very high risk due to exposures of homelessness, poverty, war, and disaster.  Emerging research on the neurobiology of resilience and other new horizons in resilience science will be highlighted.  A general resilience framework for practice will be presented.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define and analyze resilience from a developmental systems perspective at the level of individual and family.
  2. Identify protective processes indicated by research on resilience in children.
  3. Apply a resilience framework tailored to their own practices.

The Minnesota Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The Minnesota Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

About the Presenter:

Ann Masten, Ph.D., L.P., is a Regents Professor of Child Development and Irving B. Harris Professor in the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota.  Her research is focused on understanding risk and resilience in human development with the goal of informing practice and policies designed to prevent or mitigate risk and promote healthy life span development.  She is a past-president of the Society for Research in Child Development and Division 7 (Developmental) of the American Psychological Association (APA), and currently co-chairs the U.S. National Academies Forum on Investing in Young Children Globally.  She is a recipient of APA’s Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contributions to Developmental Psychology in the Service of Science and Society and author of the 2014 book, Ordinary Magic: Resilience in Development, as well as many journal articles. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1982.

Refunds, less a $5 handling free, will be given if a written cancellation is received at least two working days before the scheduled program begins. Transfer of fee to another program is granted if written cancellation notice is received at least one day before the program. No refund or transfer is given the day of the program.
