About the Program

Patient care presents diverse challenges to health care professionals, including dealing with patients who may be considered “difficult” for a variety of reasons. The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of characteristics of “difficult” patients and the complex systems in which they are seen which contribute to challenges in providing health care services. This presentation provides a framework for discussion and examples of practical approaches to dealing with “difficult” patients.  It also explores the competencies that psychologists and other health professionals need to develop or refine to work collaboratively on health care teams in interprofessional settings and reasons for psychologists to lean in to collaborative care. This presentation is at the intermediate level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health providers.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify attributes of "difficult" patients and their impact on health services.
  2. Identify strategies that health care providers can use to manage "diffifcult" patients.
  3. Identify health professional competencies for providing interprofessional, collaborative care.

The Minnesota Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The Minnesota Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
